My father worked at AT&T for 34 years. He never paid for health care coverage
yet our family was fully covered including dental care (and there were seven of
us!). He earned a good salary, got free long distance telephone calling, went
home for lunch daily, ultimately retiring from the company in his early 60’s with a
full retirement package.
Those types of relationships between an employee and employer are almost
extinct. According to Frederick Reichheld author of “ The Loyalty Effect” on
average U.S. corporations lose half of their employees every four years.
With the decline in great corporations that provide such security and longevity,
more and more entrepreneurs are striking out on their own. They are employing
their own talent and skills to carve out their future. But, being entrepreneurial
doesn’t necessarily mean going it alone. Successful entrepreneurs often tap
the time and talent of others to help make their dreams a reality.
One of the many obstacles a business owner runs into when starting or trying to
grow a business is that suddenly they are cast into the role of accountant,
marketer, lawyer administrative assistant, computer analyst, web designer, etc.,
etc.. While these jobs are crucial and need to be done they often take
entrepreneurs away from their core strength, the thing they do better than
anyone else. This can send the business adrift into a sea of mediocrity or even
become on of the 60% of business that SBA (Small Business Administration)
says fail within the first few years of operation.
A sure way to avoid this is to build your own team of trusted business partners
who can help deflect the many jobs that might derail you. For example when my
business partner and I began our business we relied on a core group of people
who ranged from lawyers, graphic designers and property managers. By relying
on these people, we were able to focus on expanding our customer base and
meeting the goal we set out to, which was saving small business owners time
and money.
Saving time and money has been a practice of Fortune 500 companies have
been using for some time now. Although outsourcing has had a negative
perception because it is a code word for exporting American jobs overseas that
is no longer the case. Outsourcing can be done domestically as well reducing
